NEW DELHI: “Welcome back, Air India,” tweeted Tata Group‘s chairman emeritus Ratan Tata after the conglomerate won the bid to acquire the cash-strapped airlines.
With the tweet, Ratan Tata posted an iconic image of JRD Tata next to an Air India plane.
Calling the acquisition “great news”, the industrialist expressed hope that the sale will provide a very strong market opportunity to the Tata Group’s presence in the aviation industry.

“On an emotional note, Air India, under the leadership of Mr JRD Tata had, at one time, gained the reputation of being one of the most prestigious airlines in the world.

“Tatas will have the opportunity of regaining the image and reputation it enjoyed in earlier years,” he said.
He added that JRD Tata would have been “overjoyed” had he been alive today.

He concluded by thanking the government for its recent policy of opening select industries to the private sector.
Meanwhile, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said it will be a rare privilege for the group to own and operate India’s flag bearer airline
“This is a historic moment, and it will be a rare privilege for our Group to own and operate the country’s flag bearer airline.
“It’ll be our endeavour to build a world-class airline which makes every Indian proud,” he said.
The government on Friday announced Tata Group as the winning bidder for Air India, clearing the way for the cash-strapped Maharaja going back to the founder exactly 68 years after India had nationalised its private airlines in 1953.
The Tatas pipped SpiceJet founder Ajay Singh with a winning bid of Rs 18,000 crore.
