Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, talking to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, mentioned Russia wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine if the nation had been admitted into NATO earlier.
He mentioned: “If we were a NATO member, a war wouldn’t have started. I’d like to receive security guarantees for my country, for my people.”
Emphasising he was grateful for the help the Alliance has supplied since Moscow’s assaults started, he mentioned: “If NATO members are ready to see us in the alliance, then do it immediately because people are dying on a daily basis.
“But in case you are not prepared to protect the lives of our individuals, for those who simply need to see us straddle two worlds, if you would like to see us in this doubtful place the place we do not perceive whether or not you’ll be able to settle for us or not — you can’t place us in this case, you can’t pressure us to be in this limbo.”
He continued: “I requested them personally to say instantly that we’re going to settle for you into NATO in a 12 months or two or 5, simply say it instantly and clearly, or simply say no.
“And the response was very clear, you’re not going to be a NATO member, but publicly, the doors will remain open.”
After, when requested about Putin’s claims that the Ukrainian authorities is stuffed with neo-Nazis, Mr Zelensky mentioned he can’t take these statements “seriously”, dubbing them “laughable.”
Yet, he admitted the Russian president’s remarks do make him fear.
He mentioned: “I’m not afraid of anything except for people, but the fact, the fact is that if he is serious about this statement he might be capable of very horrendous steps because that would mean that this is not a game for him.
“If he actually believes in this, if it is not a recreation, then we’ll simply proceed preventing in opposition to it.
“If it’s a game. But if it’s not a game, if he’s serious about it, if he thinks that this is his mission to conquer our territory and if he sees signs of neo-Nazis in our country, then many questions emerge about what else he is capable of doing for the sake of his ambitions, for the sake of his mission.”
