Only NRI seats will be on offer for OCI & PIO students

MUMBAI: OCI and PIO students looking for admission in Indian skilled institutes will henceforth be handled on a par with overseas nationals and may search admission solely beneath the non-resident Indian (NRI) quota. This will translate to fewer seats for such candidates and significantly larger charges than what Indian students pay.
Earlier, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) students had been handled on par with Indians; that they had equal alternative to compete for seats in authorities institutes in addition to take part in admission rounds of the all-India quota in medical schools. But from this yr, in case of technical schooling, OCI/PIO students will be thought-about overseas nationals who will be allotted supernumerary seats and will must pay larger charges.
Last yr, the SC had given a yr’s exemption to such students; in May 2022, it refused to increase the rule. The ministry of dwelling affairs’ notification launched on Thursday stated OCI and PIO candidates collaborating in undergraduate and postgraduate admissions will be thought-about on par with the NRI in case of these “appearing for the all India entrance tests such as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), JEE (Mains), Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) or such other tests to make them eligible for admission only against any Non-Resident Indian seat or any supernumerary seat: the OCI cardholder shall not be eligible for admission against any seat reserved exclusively for Indian citizens.”
