Man ‘brandishing a hatchet’ in custody after possible hate crime at Mississauga, Ont., mosque

Peel Region police are investigating after a man entered a mosque in Mississauga, Ont., west of Toronto, on Saturday morning and attacked the folks gathered for Fajr, daybreak prayer, with bear spray. They say he was additionally “brandishing a hatchet.”

Police have been referred to as to the Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre, close to McAdam Road and Matheson Boulevard East, at about 7 a.m.

Peel police say a 24-year-old man has been taken into custody and investigators are “considering all possible motivations, including hate-motivation.” Charges have but to be laid.
