Cyberattack on Optus Potentially Exposes Millions of Customer Accounts

SYDNEY—A cyberattack on one of Australia’s largest telecoms firms may have accessed the private data of as many as 9.8 million clients, in what one lawmaker referred to as essentially the most important information breach in recent times.

Optus, an Australian unit of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., mentioned it doesn’t but know who was behind the cyberattack that might have uncovered buyer data relationship again to 2017, together with names, dates of delivery and cellphone numbers. The firm, which mentioned it first turned conscious of the breach on Wednesday, mentioned some id paperwork may also have been compromised.
