Confusion over Punjab AG’s ‘resignation’ | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: Confusion prevailed over the resignation of Punjab advocate general (AG) A P S Deol after reports emerged on Monday that he had submitted his resignation. While the AG could not be contacted as his phone was continuously busy till the filing of this report, his son, advocate H P S Deol told TOI that reports about his father’s resignation are not true.
There was, however, no official confirmation from the state government about Deol’s resignation.
The Punjab government had notified senior advocate A P S Deol’s appointment as Punjab AG on September 27. He had replaced senior advocate Atul Nanda who had resigned following the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh as the Punjab CM.
The AG is the seniormost law officer of the state and enjoys the rank equivalent to a cabinet minister in the state.
There has been a longdrawn political slugfest over Deol’s appointment by the Congress government led by Charanjit Singh Channi. Punjab Congress president Navjot Sidhu had openly opposed two appointments by his own party’s government – that of Deol and the new DGP Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota. Unhappy Sidhu had even resigned on September 28 in protest and he had later raised the issue with party leader Rahul Gandhi on October 15.
Deol’s appointment also sparked debate
Deol’s appointment as the AG had also triggered a debate as he had represented former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, who has been facing charges in the Behbal Kalan firing incident related to Punjab’s sacrilege cases.
Sidhu’s objection to Deol’s appointment became apparent when he said in a video he posted on Twitter on September 29, “But today I see that the issues are being compromised upon. People who gave a clean chit to Badals six years back, inflicted atrocities on young boys have been given the responsibility to ensure justice. Those who got blanket bails (for former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini) have been appointed advocate general. What sort of an agenda is this? Is this how we are going to reach our goals?”
At the same time, while the Channi government has tried to resolve the stalemate by sending a panel of names of IPS officers to the UPSC, there has been no word on the fate of the advocate general.
