Ahead of polls, Punjab CM Channi slashes power tariff, hikes DA for govt staff | Chandigarh News


CHANDIGARH: Ahead of Diwali as well as assembly polls, Punjab chief minister Charanjit Channi on Monday announced a slew of sops, including a major cut in power tariff and an 11 per cent increase in dearness allowance for government employees, saying, it will cost Rs 440 crore extra to the state exchequer.
“Punjab Vidhan Sabha session will reconsider PPAs with private generators in the forthcoming session,” Channi said, adding, the cabinet has decided to slash power tariff by Rs 3 across slabs.
A total Rs 14,000 crore is likely subsidy in the state.
“It’s a Diwali gift for people of Punjab,” the chief minister added.
He further mentioned that Rs 1.19 will be the new rate for small consumers. “It will be implemented from today,” he added.
There are a total of 72 lakh consumers in the state. “Creamy layer of 5 per cent will not be included in this,” he said.
Channi further added that it will make the cheapest power tariff in Punjab in the entire country.
